BESPOKE COMMISSION FOR MALCOLM EDWARDS

I was commissioned to make a couple of unique, statement silver neckpieces by the amazing and wonderful soul that is Malcolm Edwards.

I first met Malcolm at a spiritual haven.

Malcolm is a Scottish born Hairdresser who has worked within the fashion industry for more than two decades, spending his time between London, Paris and New York, with projects taking him all over the world. He regularly collaborates with the industry’s leading photographers and publications, and is known for his exceptional creativity and collaboration with other artists to create visionary images.​

Malcolm and I had a preliminary meeting to discuss the design requirements - to get an idea of his likes and dislikes regarding aesthetics; the look we wanted to achieve with each piece of jewellery; his initial ideas and visual inspirations; the types of centrepiece stones he gravitated towards and the dimensions of the final jewellery pieces.

​I then sourced a variety of semi precious stones that would act as centrepieces to the designs for the neckpieces. Malcolm chose his favourites: a semi cut/semi rough Labradorite & a round Brazilian Chrysocolla. 

​Following this, I went about the really rewarding process of designing the pieces, which always takes me on a unexpected journey..

I work somewhat differently to others in that my jewellery designs come through me. When I design I don’t have any preconceived ideas of what I’m about to draw. Nor do I use external inspiration or stimuli in a conscious way. It flows through me - either in visions or I see shapes emerging on the paper in front of me, which I then faithfully draw out. I draw the centrepiece stone(s) that were chosen by the client onto paper and see what evolves and manifests around them.

It is an exciting process as I never know what is going to emerge! 

Before starting to design, I just ask and put out the intention that each piece I create be of help to the wearer for their highest good. And so it is, as each piece of jewellery I design embodies a positive, high vibrational energy, specific to the client.

​(Also, the designs that are featured in my ready-to-wear collection come about through the same design process, outlined above and also hold and embody high vibrational energies.)

It was a pleasure to design for Malcolm as he encouraged free reign artistically.

During our second meeting, Malcolm chose two of the designs I had produced. Together Malcolm and I discussed and tweaked a few aspects of each design. Malcolm’s input at this stage was invaluable, as was his reassurance that he loved the designs I am delighted to say!

​I showed Malcolm a hand made sterling silver chain that took 3 days to weave and that I wanted to use in one of the designs. He loved it and we incorporated it into the larger neckpiece.

​As we wanted to customise the filigree detail on the jewellery to suit Malcolm, it was decided that we would oxidise the sterling silver to give it a more manly and grungy look. (Oxidisation involves blackening certain parts of the silver to add “drama” and heighten the visual effect). See image.

I then asked my artisan filigree specialists in Armenia to handcraft the statement pieces. And voila! Here they are….

The commissioning process for bespoke jewellery takes between 11 - 13 weeks: from the initial consultation, through to the delivery of the statement jewellery piece to the client. 

Commissioned, bespoke jewellery can be made of a variety of metals: Sterling Silver, Gold, Rose Gold or White Gold. It can incorporate semi precious and/or precious stones, depending on the design brief requirements.

Style-wise, bespoke jewellery can be made using the ancient art and technique of filigree: where fine, gossamer hairs of silver or gold are incorporated within the design (as in the case of the two neckpieces handcrafted for Malcolm). 

​Or the designs can be more futuristic, so as to create a wholly different look, with “cleaner” and “slicker” lines.

The whole process for the commissioning service I offer follows the same sequence of steps that Malcolm and I went through, outlined above.

Consultations and the design process can be carried out either in person or, if you are not based in the UK: through Skype/FaceTime/Emails/Calls. Artwork will be produced to show you a representation of the final jewellery piece, with room to tweak as we together see fit. Normally a few designs will be produced for each commission to choose from.

After the initial free consultation and the decision being made to proceed, a 50% deposit of the overall fee is payable and the remaining 50% is payable upon completion and delivery of the jewellery. Price quote available upon request.​
